I'm building a website in which I need one usergroup to write articles and another to approve those articles. I don't want any of them needing to log in in the administrator section.

Is there any way to enable fronted item approval?

Unfortunately this feature is not available in K2.

However try browsing the JED or getk2.org/extend to look for extensions that further extend K2's front end functionality.
