I've been brought in on a client's pre-existing Joomla site running J 2.5.x with K2. Right now the smart search functionality picks up EVERYthing, which is a pain. Is there a way to restrict it to only K2 items?

Go to Extensions -> Plugin Manager. Choose from the Select type filter the "finder" option. This has to do with the Smart Search plugins. Disable all others but K2 and check again.
