With the latest versions of K2, the Read Times counter seems to refer to a number of unique visitors:

If this is the case, how to modify the settings to count the number of times the article was read, instead?

Hi. This is not counting unique visitors, it counts every visitor. The issue is that when Joomla! caching is enabled it is not counting correct. If you want a real counter i suggest that you use Google Analytics.
