Add a custom field to K2 Portfolio Items. It will go on the additional fields tab. It will be a drop down of categories in Virtuemart, automatically showing all current VM categories. If one is selected, then the portfolio item in the front-end will show a direct link to that virtuemart category. Something like "Shop for Products Like This"

I have to make use of existing select type of K2 Extra fields, but don’t want replace the default ‘select’ custom field.

Any suggestions please.

I guess that hacking k2 in this case will be very difficult to maintain.

Just to let you know, with a plugin you can display the dropdown of VM categories in the extra fields tab, but it will be below the extra fields section, also you can limit it to specific k2 categories.
