Is there a way to set k2 to use the first item image as cateogry image instead of those unhappy folder icons ?

Hi. No, you cannot do this. You can only replace the folder icon with your own picture ( place it in your template /templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/images/placeholder/category.png ) . You can also hide completely the category image if you don't need it.
