Is there a way to disable the sbox-window modal pop-up for specified screen widths?
Or why is the image distorted?

Even though the css looks right, the modal image on an iphone is distorted in height.

Hi. The easiest way would be to provide two links to the image, one with modal class and one without. Then with CSS media queries you can select which to show depending on resolution.
