I am trying to do something similar to this asp script, but use articles and timed content somehow in k2... any advice or ideas?

Hi. The only way you can do something similar with K2 is to create one item for each day and then use item navigation to go back and forward.

Will it display next year or will I have to change the dates to 2015 when that year begins?

It only displays the next and previous items in the category. Not, years or dates. Example: demo.getk2.org/categories/story/224/morbi-adipiscing-sapien-non-tellus (look at the "More in this category" ) . If that does not fit your needs you will have to either search for a plugin doing this or hire a developer to build it for you.
