I've tried everything... but it seems impossible to allow a logged in frontend 'contributor ' to add an item without getting a 403 - You are not authorized to view this resource error after submitting the add item form if the Edit own items option is unticked. Note that the item still does get submitted.

I want users to add items but not edit them after upload - is this possible without the 403 error message?

Without a message this is not possible.
You can however edit this message. This is the default error.php file from the system template. You can override this or change its look and feel.

Thanks for confirming. Hopefully this will be fixed in a future update.

As a workaround for now I guess I'll have to hide the 'edit item' button with CSS

This is not an error.
Once the item is published, the user is forbidden to edit it.
As I already told you that page is editable and can be overridden as well.
