The rss feature to subscribe to different K2 categories carries a major potential benefit.. But I can't seem to get it to work.

every time I click on the rss icon it shows a page with xml coding ... copying the url to rss reader applications or feedburner doesn't work.

I need help to set it up please.
Is there a guide that can assist me through the process??

Actually that is the RSS feed.
To subscribe one the feed simply paste the link in your RSS reading app.

I now understand why I am having a problem using the link.
my website is password protected, so are the contents.
Is there a way to password protect the feeds as well under this circumstance? Please assist

Unfortunately Joomla will still display its feed even when the site is offline.
Since this a Joomla! thing you should either use an .htaccess authentication or look at Joomla!'s forum for a way to disable all the feeds when the site is offline.

My issue is not that.
The rss reader is not able to retrieve the feeds because the content is not accessible to "public" but rather to registered users only. Is there a way around that?
is there an rss feeder that can use authentication (username and password) so it can retrieve the contents?
