The frontend link to edit user profile in K2 user module actually leads to editing the Joomla specific fields, while i would like users to be able to edit their K2 specific fields in thier profiles from frontend, like: gender, description, user image, URL, and notes, etc. Is it possible? Is there an extension available to accomplish this?

Users would normally have to be able to at least change their picture by themselves from frontend, right?

Hi. Which version of K2 are you using? If you are using the latest version and you have enabled K2 profiles ( under the K2 parameters )the link should load load the K2 profile page.
