Is it possible to have an intro image and description for a category (i.imgur.com/OzA0goV.png) when in category listing and when you click on the category the main image and description are shown (i.imgur.com/DNHHGTA.png).

Yes, K2 has the option to enter a category image and description in each category's options. You can also override its templates so you can change it to look like the links you sent us.
