I think I need a front page that looks more like Kiji as there is not enough places on Nokkori to place items, news letter sign up etc.

How can I do this and will it require a lot of down time for the site as this has now gone public. Optionally would you advise to just build a kiji site and then just redirect the URL?

You can install Kiji as a template and build it under a different menu item. This means no downtime but you will have to be extra careful not to leave any content unmapped (into menu items) because the Kiji will be used.

As far as the redirection, personally I would not recommend it.
