What I personally do is this:

Map each and every category into a menu item separately.
This will give you clean url of the /menu-item-alias/item/id-item-alias pattern. Item does not really bother me.

Create an empty K2 categories menu (leave the category selection empty) and call it eg: content, to handle all orphan users and tags.

Hi Krikor,

The menu thing for me would be impractical because I have about 40 categories and perhaps might get more. I think I posted about this on another post and I will look at doing a GitHub submission later on with more info etc.. about employing a new way of URL renedering based on category path.

I was mainly after best settings for the urls in the section K2 Parameters/Advanced/Advanced SEF Settings
  • Are the defaults the best?
  • and should I use a slash instead of a dash?
  • should I leave the category and item id numbers in the url

I looked at your demo but could not work out what was best from it. I am using mine as a knowledge base rather than a content replacement for joomla.

cheers

It is not really impractical, what would be impractical would be to try to control modules in these categories without any menu items.
That would be a hassle, trust me.

I personally leave the defaults with a dash.
I also leave ids' in, so if an alias is present two times, the correct item will always be retrieved. This makes your setup more bulletproof.

Hello,

This is not actually an issue. Joomla!'s router works this way, it needs menu items or extension like 404sef to provide URLs like that.
Alternatively you can use K2's advanced SEF settings.

I think it is an issue (nested category url) because most joomla components support this.

You set a parent menu item and then the component adds in the nested categories into the URL as you go deeper down the rabbit hole. Mosets tree is the first example that come to mind.

eg this is set via a single parent menu item (links), the rest of the URL is added dynamically.

quantumwarp.com/kb/links/media/images/free/sites

Perhaps when you guys get chance, because I know this would not be 5 minute job, I would like nested category URL as a feature.

I think that this thread is more suitable for this nested category talk.

I appreciate the time you have taken

If you map the first category the rest will follow.
Make sure as well to properly set parent / children categories.

@ Krikor

I am confused now (doesnt take much, lol)

Earlier in the thread you told me the only way to get properly formed nested category URLs is to use the Joomla menu system, but in your last post

If you map the first category the rest will follow.
Make sure as well to properly set parent / children categories.

You sort of say that you only have to set 1 menu item and then the rest of the category URLs will be nested in the form of:

quantumwarp.com/kb/links/media/images/free/sites

Have I read this wrong, because there are no options in the menu item or in K2 v2.7.0 parameters to allow this URL nesting to occur. The categories themselves are nested.

You will get half proper URL using nested categories if you do not want to map them to menu items.
I was merely pointing out that the functionality you are looking for is there.

However I stand by my first post, the best, more bulletproof and most efficient way is it to map them into menu items.
