I need to set creation date for some k2 articles for 2017 or later, this is for sorting of events in moduies. I notice that non of event k2 articles has been indexed by Google. Can the creation date be a reason? Other k2 articles (non-events) seem to be indexed properly.

btw, I have recently added a language and had to change the entire menu structure but now I seem to have sorted it all out and I see google gradually replacing links at least to categories. discoverminsk.by/index.php/en/minsk-travel-info-en/transport-in-minsk.html

if I type in googleI get only the category indexed but not the item. Even the tag Winter Events has been indexed but not the item.

The searchdoes not return anything. I have not intentionally submitted items to Google (except for one just for experiment and it worked) since it is the robot who should find it on its own.

I have found one item: it's creation date is set for only June 11, 2016 but Google did eventually find it and now it's in index. I have checked it multiple times over about 15 days and there was nothing.

the menu item is correct but it is strange a bit that the link does not contain SEF elements but instead I see discoverminsk.by/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=220:jazz-evenings-in-minsk&Itemid=422&lang=en (I do have SEF enabled, just re-ckecked it).

Try adding your site Google's webmaster tools, this will show you any potential errors.

ISU Short Track World Cup finally appeared in google's index! So this means I can still set creation date for the future and Google will pick it up by last modified date. I think so because I modified the article on 29 April and Google depicts it with the same date. Creation date is still 10 Feb 2017.

I am already in google webmaster tools and there are lots of broken links but they all contain categories and menu items I deleted several days ago. Will those links disappear soon?

I think yes. You can Google how to remove them, to make them disappear sooner.
