after 2.7.1 update, the SEF URLs aren't working as before.
I am using also sh404SEF component.

Previously, I had SEF URLs like:
www.example.com/k2-item-alias
now it generates URL like:
www.example.com/item/XXX-k2-item-alias (XXX= item id).

I noticed that I have to enable the setting for: Enable advanced SEF for K2 URLs and the SEF URLs are created as before the update.
which however mentions that it can be resource consuming if there are a few hundreds of items, and I already have a few hundreds of them.

I also can't find the special SEF section for sh404SEF integration.

Please advise on the issue.

The plugin for sh404SEF has been moved to a separate extension.

I would suggest using the id in the SEF URL (if you use K2's advanced SEF) since with a lot of items there are bound to be items with the same alias.
