I only want to let download K2 article attachments for a certain group of users (in Joomla 3.6). How can I set up permissions so that other users can read the article but not able to download the attachment?

You can use overrides and depending on the user's group docs.joomla.org/Accessing_the_current_user_object you can show/ hide that block.

Furthermore you will need a system plugin in order to block users who want to use a different template.

This is a nice solution but if you revert to the default protostar template the attachments will show up.

An extension which prevents this is Admin Tools (I think the PRO version though).
