I'd like to get rid of the words "Children categories" in the category view, but I can't seem to find how to do that.

This is the line that generates this string github.com/getk2/k2/blob/master/components/com_k2/templates/default/category.php#L77

The file is components/com_k2/templates/default/category.php
You need to override it (if you are not already using overrides) and remove that line.
