Hi, I've been having spammers using a direct link to our website (Joomla 3.9.3, K2 2.9.0, Josetta K2 Categories and Items plugin 2.7.0, JSitemap Pro 4.6) :

https://www.########.###/component/k2/itemlist/category/37-##########.html

How has this link been created and how do I block and prevent it? I have tried server redirect and also Joomla redirect plugin but to no avail.

Thanks

Why do you care really? Spammers could just as easily link directly to your homepage. Would you take your site down because of that?

The URL you mentioned is just a non-menu-linked URL for a category in K2. You can get similar URLs from any other Joomla component. The URL may be valid if it does not belong to a K2 category that is linked to a menu item. If you redirect it, you may be redirecting valid content.

If you're being sent traffic from specific sites, the sensible thing would be to simply block these sites as referrers. In other words, any link on these sites that points back to you can be redirected to somewhere else.

But again, is it worth it? I would say "don't bother".

I care because I haven't set up a menu to the category deliberately and don't want anyone being able to generate the url outside my control and accessing a page that I haven't configured or managed in terms of current content.

The home page is managed so I don't mind anyone visiting it directly.

There is no referrer site to block, these are direct.

I just noticed you use JSitemap. If it crawls K2 entirely then maps content to XML sitemap files, that could be the culprit if you don't link to these categories you mentioned anywhere else in your content.

Thanks. I did wonder if JSitemap was the culprit but hadn't found any evidence when I posted this topic. I'll dig deeper and see if I can find anything.

It's simple really. Download all XML files that JSitemap generates and search for the string "component/k2/itemlist/category". If you find such URLs that point to content you don't want referenced in these XML files, look for any options in JSitemap to limit its crawler on K2 content.

No options in JSitemap to limit K2 content crawlers found yet. But I have found a work around in the K2 Category settings.

Thanks for you input.

What's the workaround? (may help others in case they ever face the same issue as you)

In K2 Category> Display Settings > Item view options in category listings : Set all options to Hide, then only the folder icon is displayed if the URL is used.

Obviously I would have to change the settings if I ever use a Menu item linked to the K2 Category.
