Can't upload WebP images was created by Claire Roach
Hi
K2 won't allow me to upload WebP images. I can add them in Joomla articles fine so not a server or Joomla error.
Do I have to allow them somewhere? I have looked around but can't see anything in the settings.
Thanks Claire

Nope, it's not supported because it's not (in turn) supported by all browsers yet: caniuse.com/#feat=webp

Hi Fotis,
Finally the last commonly used one: Safari also supports WebP images since Sep 2020. It seems that K2 has no problem too when we put a WebP in the code of an Item... BUT ;) it is still impossible to add it as the image of an Item. May we beg for it?
Thank you!

I'm aware of the recent change in Safari and it's surely on my todo list.
If you have control of the server in question and can install software, I'd be happy to suggest a bash script to automate the .webp creation process from .jpg images in K2.

You can upload JPG files as usual, but you can install a plugin in Joomla to autoconvert "on the fly" the JPG/PNG to webp without effort
You can check it in my personal blog and all posts in www .raulprietofernandez .net/blog
As you can see, the images served are webp, but I work only with JPG/PNG files.

Thank you - and I know, there are converters and plugins. But I want to know if you can choose to upload a webp directly instead of a jpeg via k2 / mediamanager. :-)

You can upload webp images, but the resulting image is a jpg one (for now).
We plan on extending image resizing in K2 to create both JPG & WEBP.
