Thumbnails badly pixeled and too small

I am assisting a professional photographer to display his photographs on his Joomla website. The quality of the images shown is most important. Everything is working fine with Simple Image Gallery Pro v2.5.1, except;
The thumbnail image quality is really bad and is heavily pixelited. The same result if one would heavily compress a JPG image.
In addition, I cannot adjust the thumbnail image size. The "Thumbnail viewport width & height" only adjust the frame around the thumbnail but not the thumbnail itself.
Questions
1. How do I make the thumbnail images appear less pixelited?
2. How do i adjust the actual thumnail size (not the frame around the thumbnail)?
