I have here joomla 1.6.3 site (usede jUpgrade to migrate it WITHOUT any extensions and simple image gallery plugin work ok in the backend now) but the front-end thumbnail view is no good:

The version of simple image gallery is Simple Image Gallery PRO (by JoomlaWorks)2.5.1

Rename your images without using %, gaps, caps, dashes or any other special characters in their names. Then clean your cache!
