No thumbnails-they appear in cache-simple file names 2.jpg, etc was created by Vivian Duplant

I see many references to similar problems, but most end with permission problems or file names that contain other characters. My file names are simple: 1.jpg, 2.jpg, etc. It is a new install with correct file permissions and user permissions.

No thumbnails but if I click on one of the empty thumbnail blocks, the image pops up.
