I also am wondering the same thing.  I'm currently using Slimbox with Image Gallery Pro.  I've got some images that are 3000X4000px, and some that are 1200X1400px, etc.  Basically, different sizes and different ratios that are way too large to use the current pop-up box. 

BTW - I saw a different thread that mentioned ColorBox might work:

Before I pay for another extension - can someone please confirm that using Colorbox (or perhaps list some other extensions) will allow more control over the pop-up image size?

Pop ups display images in their original dimensions, which means that you need to resize your images before you upload them in your site.
