I have the two versions of the plugin installed (pro and non-pro)

With the standard version enabled the thumbnails show up and everything works however if I disable it and enable the pro version in order to get the labels etc the thumbnails stop working. I can still click on the captions to open the pictures in a new tab in firefox.

Do both plugins use the GD Image Library or just the pro version?

Any ideas on how I can get the pro version working?

First of all you have to uninstall the sig free! Not only disable it.  ;)
Then you can enable the pro and check its functionalities!

For various other reasons I have done a total fresh install of Joomla.

All the settings are default, the only extension I have installed is SIG Pro and one theme installed.

Images are uploaded and I can add them individually and they are being linked too just not showing thumbnails.

You will need the username guest and password password to view it.

The temp folder has permissions of 0744 and the files in the folder have permissions of 0644.

I can download the files from the temp folder with my ftp client and they are showing up as images.

The template loads already the mootools js library.
Try to change the popup engine to one of the Grybox, Lytebox or some other!
Those engines use other than mootools library without conflicts.

When I write on browser the linkwhere is the first of the thumbs, the server returns me the message

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /images/stories/temp/5fe9c9df6d2026763aa1adb5b4eeb3eb.jpg on this server.

Change the permissions of the temp folder!  ;)
