Overall I'm very pleased with this component, as it displays images in a nice way, and everything worked out of the box. However, I'm using it to display quite a few images as I'm using it for my portfolio on my website. When doing this, the page loads very slowly. I'm guessing it has do to with server load and whatnot, but I'm not really able to fix this on my own. Is it possible to make load times faster?

I just browsed your site and the pages were loading just fine.
I didn't have to wait at all for the galleries to load.

Maybe it is something that has to do with your internet connection.

It's not my connection, believe me. Pages without images load quickly, pages with images (SIG) loads slowly...
