This is a css conflict with your template. Ask help from your template provider please.

I used a template builder to generate the template for this site. Which part of the CSS should I investigate? Should I change the CSS for the template or the image gallery CSS?

The funny thing is: I use this plugin on another site as well and the images display nicely. However is I use that same template on this site, the images do not display correctly. That's something I didn't expect. There is a difference: On the site where the images display correctly I use plugin version 1.21. The site where the images do not display correctly uses the plugin version 2.2...

Update: I installed version 1.2.1 (R for Joomla 1.5) and now the images display nicely.
