I have been using the free version and would now like to get the paid version. However, I would firstly like to know if it's possible to display images within a module position?

Ideally I would like a small module to display only 3 images at the top of my website.

Is this possible?

Hi. Simple Image Gallery ( and Pro version ) are content plugins. This means that they can be executed in any extension ( component or module ) that is parsing content plugins. So it depends on the module you want to use. The most simple solution is to use a Custom HTML module and place there the gallery tag. Then the gallery will be displayed in the module. You can test this also with the free version. Just remember to set "Prepare Content" option of custom HTML module to "Yes".
