I'm getting the small whitebox for some of my thumbnails.

Everything was working fine until I deleted some images.

Images are there and show up when you click the thumbnail.

Is this a caching issue?   

I've tried playing with permissions 644 for images and 755 for the folders and showthumb.php, but to no avail.

Please advise.

Your problem is because you haven't deleted the images you thought you have. Delete the images and clean your cache.
