Suddenly the thumbnails have disappeared.
The popups appear ok when the X is clicked on
I've not installed any new components/plugins since site went live 12 months ago

Any ideas?
Would upgrade to 1.5.14 be an issue?

The server had suphp installed and so the file/folder permissions all needed to be changed depending upon what the settings where before hand.
This advice from the plugin Troubleshooting
Thumbnails do not show up (user sees red X's - in IE). If this is the case, the problem is due to wrongly enforced file permissions from your server (the file showthumb.php should be writable - 755 or 777). Or your server is missing the GD Image Library. Either way, ask your hosting company to fix this.
is rendered incorrect as a result and so files must be set to 644 and folders to 755 for this to work.

In an attempt to set the SIG plugin directory with a less prohibitive mode, I changed it to 777 permission giving it more "flexibility" to act.
But this went wrong, and after a lot of tries, I'm tried to change back the directory to the 755 permission, and now the THUMBNAILS are Showing up!
PS.: The entire directory needs to be changed to 755:
/**yoursite**/plugins/content/plugin_jw_sig
Please try it and post the results!

I'm having the same problem. I built the gallery and it went well during the week that I built it and suddenly, all thumbnails turn blank with a red X. Getting the problem with IE7, IE8 and Firefox 3.5.5. Also tried to modify the file permissions but it doesn't work.
Tried to uninstall the pluging, redownloaded the pluging for your website and re-installed it, same problem.
Is the pluging could conflict with another one?
I'm very confused now, don't know what to do, any idea?
Thanks

only 775 on both folder and showthumb.php works at all (only when logged in). I turned off all other extensions and still thumbs don't show up..
also, I upgraded joomla to 1.56 and reinstalled SIG plugin, still no luck :(

My server also runs PHP 5.2, so this must be it.
I turned on error reporting, and it shows:
Notice: Undefined variable: gd_support in /home/lidija/public_html/plugins/content/jwsig.php on line 83
