The menu item can have an image and you can use the notes fields as a brief description.

but still, it would be great to have a module that brings categories, like the modk2_content but with an option to choose categories and not only items. Cause the notes that I broth to the menu item aren't so flexible , for example: I cant add a link to the note or use any word styles ,like underline or headings. Its not friendly for the user.

for those who are still looking: there is a great extension for k2 menu, called: MEGA MENU FOR K2 , with descriptions for menu items and possibility to add more different fields.
