I found the problem!
It's related to proc_open() php procedure.
Almost every host has this disabled due to security issues.
The component calls something like this:
http://localhost/administrator/index.php?option=com_k2&view=media&task=connector&token=42&test=test&mimes%5B%5D=image&cmd=open&target=&init=1&tree=1&_=1321046815101
Response:
<br />
<b>Warning</b>: proc_open() has been disabled for security reasons in <b>/home/.../www/administrator/components/com_k2/lib/elfinder/elFinderVolumeDriver.class.php</b> on line <b>2378</b><br />
Looking for a solution...

- Infinity is something we cannot calculate yet.

The only reason why we say something is infinity is because we cannot calculate it yet…and there are some things we will never be able to calculate.

also scroll through your php.ini and find
disable_functions = bla,bla,bla,proc_open,bla
understandable what should be done.
