This extension is dead.
I believe the reason is simple... Joomla now does what K2 did

K2 is far better, the only similarity I can see is nested categories and that's about it!

Some examples:
- Custom fileds
- Tags
- Author box
- Comments
- Header image
and many more.
It's true that with A LOT of other components it's possible to replicate these functions but you have to use A LOT of other components.
I think that if k2 team works quickly k2 could be a great open extensions for many years!

In 1.6/1.7 you have to write your own in php.
1.6/1.7 doesn't even come close to K2.

The missing pieces at this time are:
2.5svn to stable and released
SigPro - that is recognized
AllVideos working with 2.5
SigPro has been updated (the fix to get it working in 2.5 will likely be fixed in the 2.5 release
Watch the joomlaworks.gr site for the update to All video for 1.6/7
BTW, the JoomlaBamboo template and Jbzendgrid i installed which was labeled 1.6 the files actually say 1.6/7 and the template worked on 1.7

Joomla_17 still can not overcome the K2, but Joomla_20 certainly going to manage to do it
Perhaps, K2 can reinvent itself, but needs a little humility and common sense
K2 is too focused on its main creator, and it always gives bad result
K2 is not dead yet but seems to have announced the death ...
Apparently, there is no schedule, we never know what will happen or when ... And talk about it has become taboo
